  • Photoshop How To’s – Turn black and white photo to coloured photo

Hope you can find this as the easiest and simplest way on how to turn a black & white photo to a coloured photo :-)

As a sample, I used not a black & white photo but a photo of an actual black penciled drawing (that’s liv tyler, by the way.. hope you see the resemblance.. hehe).

    liv tyler

    1. Open the photo file on Photoshop and then Create a New Layer (so you will have the Background layer, which is the original photo. And then a blank Layer 1).

    new-layer

    2. On Layer 1, change the Blending Mode from Normal to Color.

    color

    3. Pick a color for the skin from the Color Pallette and then use the brush tool to color the skin.

    brush skin

Create another layer (this would be for coloring the lips), set the Blending Mode of that Layer to Color, choose color of the lips from the Color Pallette, and then use the brush tool to colorize it.

    brush lips

Repeat the steps for coloring the eyes and hair.

    brush eyes

    brush hair

That’s basically it. We just have to create a new layer for each color and just make sure to set the Blending Mode to Color.

    So, here’s the result:

    originalcolored version
original version (left); colorize version (right)
